Just discharged from the Cleveland hospital UK after complete knee replacement by Mr Rajaratnam. Discharge after 3 nights stay .
Quite remarkable . No pain at all - just a little discomfort after intense physio.
This surgical team lead by Sam is just superb. His anaesthetist Barry Phillips was caring and compassionate, and has put a drug regimen together which is fantastic
. I’m a retired pharmacist and was somewhat sceptical, but Barry has managed to formulate a cocktail which gives maximum benefit with hardly any side effects.
Arranged home physio as suggested by Sam, and this is ideal . Also using the ice machine Sam suggests .

Mr Rajaratnam performed total knee replacement surgery on my left knee in May 2023. I am 74 years old and took the prospect of surgery very seriously. I was so pleased with the treatment and outcome that I was eager for him to do the same again on my right knee in November 2023 - so, both knees in the same year. Sam is an exceptional knee surgeon, and has an exceptional and very caring team: his main nurse, Christine, and his anaesthetist, Barry among others. I could not have asked for better, kinder, more attentive treatment. I would unreservedly recommend Sam to anyone thinking about having knee surgery and wanting absolutely optimal care.

Mr. Sam Rajaratnam FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) is an internationally renowned Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee replacement surgery and sporting injuries of the knee.
Mr Rajaratnam has performed over 7000 knee replacements with excellent outcomes, and is an expert on rapid recovery and lower pain scores following knee surgery. He has one of the lowest revision (failure) rates and best outcomes (PROMS) for knee replacements on the UK National Joint Registry and is an advocate for transparent, outcomes driven healthcare. He is an expert in robotic assisted knee replacement and was first to implement ROSA robotic technology within the UK private sector.
Mr Rajaratnam regularly treats professional and amateur sportspeople with soft tissue injuries to their knee, and performs over 120 ACL reconstructions and other soft tissue procedures each year as day case procedures. He regularly treats members of the Professional Football Association and is on the faculty of the FIFA Football medicine conference each year.
Mr Rajaratnam originally trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital in London and qualified with a First Class degree in anatomy and an MBBS in 1997. He trained via the Royal College of Surgeons, England at numerous centres of excellence in the UK and then Australia.
Mr Rajaratnam was awarded the Walter Mercer Gold Medal for the best performance throughout Great Britain and Ireland in the final FRCS Orthopaedics examination in 2006. He was the British Orthopaedic Association Ambassador to Hong Kong in 2007 and now enjoys an excellent international reputation as a leading knee surgeon and a key opinion leader in his field.
